De Groote Peel National Park still conveys the impressive atmosphere of great solitude in the vast heaths and moors that were already notorious among the Romans. Until the 19th century, "de Peel" was a feared area that was never entered - several hundred square kilometers in size. Only a short hike is possible during the breeding season (March 15 to July 15) and a short cut during the migration period of the cranes (Oct. 15 to Nov. 30).
The path into the national park begins opposite Buitencentrum de Pelen. It turns right past a historic farm on the right. Here we go straight ahead and through a left-hand bend along a moorland lake on the left. At a junction where a boardwalk branches off to the left (later our way back), we turn right. We cross an open moor with moor lakes and after several folding gates we come to a forest, before which we turn left. The first forest path on the right leads to a crossroads, where we follow the sandy path on the left, which is also used as a cycle path. At the end, we turn left and take the first path to the right.Where the sandy path bends to the right, we turn left and then immediately right onto a narrow path that leads us through heathland to the highest point of our hike, , 33 m above sea level. From here, we have a fantastic view over the area just five meters below. We follow the path through young oak woodland until we reach a sandy path. Here we turn left and follow this
