Since 1893, the Greizer Hut has served as a base in the Floitengrund, oriented towards the glacier mountains of Großer Löffler or Schwarzenstein and still retains the charm of a genuine, rustic mountaineer's hut. The main audience nowadays is, of course, the hikers crossing the Berlin High Trail, aside from the day hikers exploring the impressive high valley of the Floite. Surrounded by breathtaking steep slopes, through which the silver threads of wild streams shoot everywhere, this offers a great scenery within the framework of an easy but depending on the starting point quite long hike. In case of limited stamina, one can concentrate on the upper part with the help of the hut taxi – similar to the case of the Kasseler Hut in the Stillupp Valley.
Up to just before Tristenbachalm, 1177 m, the road is paved; the ascent from the village of Ginzling is rather unrewarding. After the driving ban, the Floitengrund opens up. Going further into the valley, after a noticeably ascending section, we reach the small Sulzenalm, 1319 m, and then switch to the left side of the stream. Next, the snack station Steinbockhütte, 1382 m, is reached. The forest road continues parallel to the river, passes the Böckachalm, and gradually rises to the material cableway, about 1620 m. From here on, definitely only on foot. Our path winds moderately steeply through the moraine terrain. The passage to the Berlin Hut is left to the right and we head to the steep trough slope on the left, which is overcome in many switchbacks. On the terrain terrace above, the Greizer Hut, 2227 m, welcomes us. Descent the same way.

Mark Zahel
