Caspar David Friedrich, born in 1774 in Greifswald, was the most important painter of the German early Romantic period. He became world-famous for his landscape paintings. The Eldena monastery ruins, like the chalk cliffs on the island of Rügen, are one of those motifs that Friedrich immortalized in several famous paintings. On the way there, we explore the historic old town of Greifswald and the old towing path along the Ryck.
From the station square in Greifswald, we walk to the bus station opposite and enter the ramparts. We keep left, then at the next fork right and enter the medieval old town. Passing St. Jacobi and the main building of the university on Domstraße, we reach St. Nikolai Cathedral. Behind it, we turn left and immediately right into Lappstraße. Past the town hall, we arrive at the marketplace, lined by several beautiful medieval houses. After crossing the square diagonally left, we continue on Knopfstraße to the museum harbor with numerous historic ships. A swing pedestrian bridge spans the Ryck river here, allowing larger ships to pass through. We stay on this side of the bank and walk along Hansering to the Fangenturm, built around 1300 and originally part of the city wall. Following Hafenstraße along the river, we reach the yacht harbor, where a promenade path begins, originally laid out as a towing path. Before the introduction of steam navigation, horses were used to tow sailing ships
