Great Speikkogel, 2140 m
The Koralpe is a vast plateau with gentle grassy slopes, which, as the name suggests, are ideal for livestock grazing. For hikers, it offers a beautiful and easy tour area adorned in early and midsummer with the most beautiful, sometimes rare flowers: delicate feather carnations, bright arnica, real spikenard, and deep red Pannonian gentian grow from dense carpets of chamois heather and heather. We owe this flora to the limited glaciation during the last Ice Age. Another special feature is the various types of rocks we can admire around the Great Speikkogel, as well as the 'Öfen,' mighty rock blocks in bizarre shapes. Some of these large rock formations can be admired during the ascent through the Great Cirque. On the Great Speikkogel, there is an air traffic control facility; the large domes, called gold caps, give the summit a distinctive appearance. Thanks to this station, there is a paved road that continues from the Koralpe parking lot past the Koralpe house to the summit, allowing even "mountain-inexperienced" visitors to achieve an easy summit success. We choose the charming ascent path through the Great Cirque with its primeval, old tree population and descend comfortably via the road.
From the Koralpe parking lot, we walk about 200 m back along the access road, then turn right onto a forest road (signpost Großhöllerhütte), which we follow for about half an hour to a bridge; before the bridge, we turn right onto the path into the Great Cirque, 1570 m. Passing under old, gnarled spruces and along a babbling brook, our path leads into the Koralpe – Great Cirque nature reserve – after fifteen minutes we reach another fork: to the left is the Grillitschhütte, we go right and slowly ascend through the cozy forest to the forest edge. Before us unfolds the Great Cirque, a wide hollow densely covered with green alders and alpine rose bushes, crossed by little streams that intersect our path, and dotted with individual, outstanding, mighty rocks. It is a beautiful path, like through an enchanted landscape, which comes to a very abrupt end at the Steinschneider, 2070 m: passing the transmission masts, we head toward the road on which we cover the last meters to the Great
