The Pfunderer Mountains, which extend as a rather large "appendage" of the Zillertal Alps from Pfitsch towards the Puster Valley and Tauferer Valley, are a quite solitary mountain area in many parts. And also rather charismatic, as summit shapes like Grabspitze demonstrate. The three-thousander selects the contenders given a long arduous route, which down in the Pfitscher Valley is listed with a daunting five-hour ascent time. Challenged by this tough task, I can retrospectively also praise it highly: Here we feel very close to the primal forms of mountaineering and are moreover rewarded with a view stretching from the Ortler to the Sexten Dolomites, from the Karwendel to Brenta and Adamello.
We start at the Pfitscher hamlet Platz or the farms of Überwasser and first take No. 11 to the left of the creek over meadows into the woodland. The gully is crossed somewhat further back to the right than indicated on maps. Then it goes on a forest road into the mountain forest, soon followed by a smaller trail which climbs steeply. After a distinctive right turn you reach a clearing at about 1800 meters (sign "landscape protection area"). A quarter of an hour later a small hunting hut at 1904 m is passed. Thus gradually out of the forest and keeping left nearly level into a large hollow. Shortly before the Überwasser gully the path forks at 1914 m: While No. 11A crosses further, No. 11 is our summit route. On the following meadow slope both track and marking are sparse. You must soon cross a first gully (carefully due to steep and possibly slipped slopes), then a second water-carrying channel. Temporarily continue on the left side before the creek above its cascade step is crossed

Mark Zahel
