An incredibly impressive hike from the end of the valley over green vegetated mountain slopes onto a wide plateau, over which and subsequently along the east-facing mountain ridge the path winds to the saddle. Up the south-facing slope, finally a climb secured with steel cables to the summit. Deep views into the surrounding valleys and into neighboring Italy.
Author’s recommendation
Remnants of the front fortifications visible everywhere, but of little historical value.
From the Erschbaum parking lot, gravel road to the end of the valley. From there, follow the markings ascending the east side of the slope to the Tannerhütte (shelter, open). Continue eastwards onto a plateau, then via switchbacks to the east basin edge and in a long stretch to the saddle. Above the Standschützenhütte relatively flat to the state border with Italy and the Karnischer Höhenweg. Crossing this briefly over a gravel path upwards, eventually over a small rock step and then a climb secured with steel cables to the summit plateau and a short further stretch to the summit. Usually, the same route is taken back. However, if you turn off at the Standschützenhütte (which we did not do - it is small and usually overcrowded on cool or rainy days), a short descent is recommended and the route over the Weitenstall and Weitensattel back to the plateau of the ascent route. Then return via the ascent route to the car or parking lot.

From Lienz by train or bus to Sillian, from there continue by bus to Kartitsch-Obertilliach.
Directions
Most pleasant access from Lienz on the B 100 to Tassenbach, from Sillian or the Pustertal also to Tassenbach. There take the turnoff to Katitsch/Obertilliach. At the end of Kartitsch village, drive down to the right at a group of houses (easy to miss) to a timber storage area. The path into the Erschbaum valley leads over the bridge. The path itself is only suitable for vehicles with higher ground clearance or for patient drivers specialized in ruts. According to local inhabitants, access through the Erschbaum valley is tolerated despite a driving ban. Drive to the end of the road or the end of the valley.
Parking
A slightly easy-to-miss turnoff to the right from the federal road in the district of Erschbaum (shortly after Kartitsch, coming from the west) to the valley floor. After crossing the creek, ample parking is available. Alternatively, driving into the Erschbaum valley is possible and tolerated. Drive to the end of the route. However, you should be in an off-road vehicle or have experience with "off-road driving". Deep and wide water crossings. Firm ground. Parking for several cars is available there.
