Roadbook
The route can be easily reached by leaving your car in the large parking lot of the Timonchio church. From here, proceed on foot along Via dei Tretti and, after about one hundred meters, take Via Trentini Pierella. Crossing the small bridge over the Timonchio stream, the path opens to the right and officially begins the hike.
The first stretch follows the stream course, accompanied by the pleasant sound of flowing water. You encounter a cross erected in 2020 in memory of those who, during the Covid-19 pandemic, "offered or risked their lives for others." Shortly after, a gentle climb leads to the Pierella locality, whose name comes from the type of friable limestone ("piera") characteristic of the whole area.
Passing two buildings on the east side of the group of houses, the path climbs about 150 meters to a junction. Here you can choose to continue straight along the main trail, which leads to the tunnel area, or take an easier variant that goes directly to the Gorlini hamlet, which is connected to the same tunnels.
Those who choose to continue straight face a short steeper section: in just 200 meters, they reach the area of historical-military interest. Going down about fifty meters, you reach the lower tunnel, short and easily walkable using the flashlight on your smartphone. It was excavated to support the trench above and two machine gun posts that overlooked the Orco valley, now offering a splendid view of Summano, Ciove, and Novegno. You are on Poggio Gorlini, part of the third Italian defensive line built after the 1916 Strafexpedition.
After also visiting the upper tunnel, wider and also used as a refuge in case of attack, the path continues towards the Gorlini hamlet. In this part, the route is flat and panoramic: shortly, you reach a point from which you can admire the entire plain. Following the Nature Path 1 for about 200 meters, with slight changes in elevation, you then turn left, walking along the crest of a small hill until you reach the Costalta locality.
From here, the path quickly descends into the woods. You pass by an old "spartioro," which testifies to the importance of spring waters for ancient settlements. Turning left, the route flattens again and leads within a few minutes to the Trentini locality, where you find the paved road. From here, a short descent comfortably brings you back to the starting point at the Timonchio church.
