The Görsdorfer Heide circular hike takes visitors deep into the “Grünes Band Thüringen” National Natural Monument. When Germany was divided, the Werra Railway line was shut down; nature took over and now provides a refuge for many species. The Görsdorfer Heide is maintained and developed by the Thuringian Nature Conservation Foundation. Numerous remnants of the former border—such as watchtowers and sections of the wall—the patrol path with its defensive ditches, and the remains of the Werrabahn line are scattered throughout the area. A visit to the nature reserve is especially worthwhile during the heather bloom in late summer.
Author’s recommendation
Located on the Bavarian side, in the heart of the Görsdorfer Heide Nature Reserve, lies the Rottenbacher Moor.
The hiking trail runs away from populated areas through nature reserves and the Thuringian Green Belt National Natural Monument. Please stay on the trails and bring plenty of food. The Kolonnenweg was not built as a hiking trail, but as a patrol route for the GDR border troops.
Tips and suggestions
The Thuringia Nature Conservation Foundation regularly offers guided tours of the Green Belt.
Roadbook
The easiest way to start the circular hike through the Görsdorfer Heide is at the former Eisfeld–Rottenbach border crossing. There is plenty of parking available at the border museum there. However, it’s also easy to start the hike from Görsdorf. The trail follows the former patrol route used by the GDR border troops—the Kolonnenweg.
