Once you've made the climb, this tour takes you across the Gobert limestone plateau with only slight elevation changes, spanning Hessian and Thuringian territory. Along the way, you'll pass through beech, oak, and noble deciduous forests and even some old coppice woods. You'll also want to hike to the rewarding viewpoints with lyrical names like "Wolfstisch," "Salzfrau," and "Silberklippe" at the edge of the plateau, as they offer wide-ranging views: to the west over Hessian Switzerland to the Hoher Meissner, to the south over the Werra Valley, and to the southeast over the southern Eichsfeld.
From the car park below the Lourdes Chapel, we take the concrete slab path up, which turns into a wide forest track at the upper slope. At the top, we reach a signposted intersection of wide forest tracks, which we cross straight ahead to shortly enter the "Green Belt" corridor. From there, we make a detour to the Uhlenkopf viewpoint: Turn right and after 150 m follow the "Uhlenkopf" sign to the left. Afterwards, return to the start of the detour and head south from there. Where the "Green Belt" bends left, a further detour to the "Beautiful View" is possible on the right. Then follow the Kolonnenweg towards the southeast and leave it to the right at the rest area Am Sägewerk. Once back in the forest, you reach a junction and take the path to the left ("Circular route Wolfstisch", "P4"). Follow the hiking trail closely marked "P4" and ignore forest tracks to the left or descents to the right. You'll pass an old lime kiln and shortly after reach the "Wolfstisch" with its viewpoint. At

Sabine Gilcher
