Glacier Perito Moreno Walkway

Our circular tour in Los Glaciares National Park starts at the parking lot near the Canal de los Témpanos. The paths lead us along well-maintained footbridges through southern beech forest and repeatedly right up to the impressive edge of the Perito Moreno glacier. After just a few meters, we reach the first viewpoints with a direct view of the blue ice wall, which is up to 50 m high. The Perito Moreno glacier itself is around 30 km long, around 5 km wide at the front and up to 700 m thick. It regularly "calves" loudly into Lago Argentino - an event that can be observed from several vantage points. We experience the glacier as part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field (HPS/SPI), the largest contiguous ice mass in the southern hemisphere outside Antarctica, which also extends far beyond the national border to Chile. On a clear day, we can see the surrounding peaks from the footbridges, such as the 2,950 m high Cerro Pietrobelli, Teniente Iglesias (2,130 m) and Dos Picos (2,053 m).
