Gourmet tour to the highest peak of the Günser Mountains

The first cross-border nature park between Austria and Hungary, Geschriebenstein-Írottkő, is characterized by its vast closed oak and hornbeam forests. Very original is also the observation tower on the highest mountain of Burgenland, where a border stone stands right in the middle of the ground floor. We choose one of the most beautiful starting points for the ascent to the summit: the romantic little town of Lockenhaus.

From the main square in Lockenhaus we hike uphill following the red-yellow marking along the road towards Rechnitz. At the hairpin bend near the village entrance sign we go straight ahead on a forest road (signpost towards Geschriebenstein and Rechnitz). After 10 minutes a path to the Margarethenwarte branches off to the left; we continue straight ahead through a deep ditch towards Geschriebenstein, clearly marked. A few minutes later our red-yellow marked path leaves the forest road at a junction and climbs more steeply to the right through the forest. 15 minutes later we cross a wide forest road; here uphill to the right. Finally, we reach a saddle with a signpost pointing back to Rechnitz on the right (red-yellow arrow; our later descent). We continue half left on a forest path towards Geschriebenstein and cross a forest road. 200m further the path turns sharply left and shortly after crosses the B 56 Lockenhaus–Rechnitz. 100m later a MTB route branches off to the right, 5 minutes
