Follow the direction of sign 533, “Circuit de la Gerle,” and the yellow trail markers.
The trail runs along the right bank of the stream, then climbs through pastures and plantations.
At the end of these, step over the wire fence and continue along the trail. Be careful: the path cuts across a bend in the trail; continue straight ahead. Shortly afterward, you’ll pass by the Gerle waterfall. Next, cross the river’s branches on your left and follow the yellow trail markers through the fields; step over a wire fence again to rejoin a trail and take it to the right until you reach signpost 534.
Follow the signs for “La Roche” and leave the trail to take a path slightly further down.
Don’t miss the ruins of the Flotte family’s castle (12th century) on your left, which overlooks the village of La Roche-des-Arnauds.
The descent goes through the forest (not over the scree—you’d end up on private property), along the left bank of the Epervier torrent, and back to the starting point.
Author’s recommendation
The trail takes you around the Épervier Stream, first along the left bank, then along the right bank, and up to the suspended plateau of Les Baux (composed of a thick layer of alluvial deposits resulting from glacial and hydrological erosion).
Enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the Céüse Plateau to the south, the Tête de Clappe and La Barre to the north, not to mention the ruins of the Flotte family’s fortified castle (late 12th century), of which only part of the keep remains, but whose location on the rocky spur overlooking the village offers a breathtaking view of the village and the valley.
