Northeast of Kaufbeuren, the Georgenberg stretches for a few kilometers between the extended valley floors of Wertach and Gennach, mostly covered by the Gutenberger Forest. Just behind St. Georg's Church, accessible in midsummer via a fragrant linden avenue, ditches remind of the long-disappeared castle of the lords of Germaringen, in whose vaults immeasurable treasures were once said to be hidden.
From Georgihaus in Untergermaringen, we follow the gently ascending Georgibergstraße towards Georgiberg. This passes the three old steel bells hanging on a wooden frame, which until 1991 called the faithful to prayer on Georgenberg. Rosary chapels adorn the asphalted linden avenue hiking trail, which offers views over the Wertach valley to the all-around visible St. Georg's Church with the isolated settlement on Georgenberg, 718 m. Far to the south, the jagged Alpine range surprises.After a restful tour break, we enjoy a forest path heading straight over the elongated ridge of the Gutenberger Forest and gradually descend to Ketterschwang, 648 m, a district of Germaringen. With the inviting inns behind us, we follow the signposted "Gutenberg" and pass the pretty onion-domed church on the gently ascending mountain road.
