The Gensgitsch, the local mountain of Mariapfarr, can be climbed from several places in the valley but requires an ascent of about 1000 meters. However, it is a family route with a high experience value if you drive up to the Gensgitschhütte at 1800m by car via a toll forest road.
The hike offers a wonderful view over the entire Lungau and also of well-known neighboring mountains such as the Hochgolling, Preber, Zechnerkarspitz, all the ski mountains of Lungau, and, with good visibility, up to the Hafner.
Author’s recommendation
From the summit of Gensgitsch, you can reach the Lesshöhe, which is 200m higher, in about 1.5 hours, but this route is no longer family-friendly.
Ascents from the valley are possible from Pirka (parking lot directly in front of the barrier), from Lignitz, or from Hintergöriach. Then the route has about 1000 meters of elevation gain.

Track types
Roadbook
The well-marked path begins directly at the Gensgitschhütte. In the first section, there are still isolated trees and rock blocks, which provide a welcome change for children. Further along the way, you will find cattle troughs.
The path leads over alpine meadows and small trails and is technically easy. There are no dangerous spots.
The summit with summit cross and summit book is only recognizable very late.
According to the sign, the walking time is 1 1/4 hours and can be managed in under 2 hours even with small children. The descent takes 45 minutes; over the alpine meadows, children are usually just as fast.
Directions
From Mariapfarr towards Göriach, turn left after about 2 km to Pirka.
At the last two farms (Karlbauer and Kasperlbauer), you can rent the key for the barrier of the trail association for a fee of 8 EUR. The forest road begins in a left curve between the farms; after about 200 m, there is a barrier with a parking lot in front of it.
After the barrier, keep left and always follow the main path to the Kobaltsattel. Here choose the left path, which leads via a long hairpin bend and then several short switchbacks directly in front of the hut to the starting point, Gensgitschhütte.
(The right path at Kobaltsattel also leads to Gensgitschhütte but is somewhat worse)
Parking
There is space for 5-10 vehiclesCoordinates
