Gartnerkofel, 2195 m
If you drive upstream along the Gail Valley, you can already see from Lake Pressegger in the southwest a first striking rocky mountain. It is the Gartnerkofel, a very popular peak known for many botanical and geological special features in its surroundings. In June, the Wulfenia blooms on the alpine meadows around the Gartnerkofel, which only occurs here in Europe. A geo-trail with several information boards provides information about the remarkable geology of the area.
From the small wooden hut with many WW just before the state border at Nassfeld Pass, we follow the signposts for the »Auernig-Höhenweg«. Shortly after the Nassfeld church, we turn right onto a path that is partly quite steep and also strenuous, finally through dwarf pines, leading to Auernig, 1863 m (summit bell). (If you walk about 100 m further southwest from the summit, you can look from a border stone, 1825 m, into the valley of the Winkelbach 500 m below.) Along the state border, we walk down into a shallow saddle and then over some small rock steps to Garnitzenberg, 1950 m. From there, we descend briefly and go west below the rocky Gugga to the Garnitzentörl, 1856 m. We are now in the area of the lifts and pistes in the east of the Sonnenalpe Nassfeld. Passing the upper stations of several lifts, the well-trodden, partly quite gravelly path takes us to the junction towards Kammleiten , 1971 m, and finally in some switchbacks up to the large cross on the Gartnerkofel , 2195 m,
