In the wild Geigenkamm, only a few peaks are accessible by a marked route. Therefore, the Fundusfeiler has great significance as the local mountain of the Frischmann Hut. The fact that this secures a three-thousand-meter trophy is especially pleasing to statistic enthusiasts. More important, of course, is the far-reaching view over the mountainous landscape of the Ötztal and Pitztal valleys stretching to the firn-glacier-covered main Alpine ridge in the south. And for some, also the visit to the Frischmann Hut, known for its good cuisine.
The Umhauser hut taxi will comfortably take us up to the Hintere Fundusalm, 1964 m, by prior arrangement. A hike from Umhausen would take almost three hours longer, from Köfels somewhat less. Before the Fundussee, we keep to the right side and then ascend rapidly towards the Frischmann Hut, 2192 m. To the west, the Funduskar opens where at first no obstacles appear. Under the Lehner Grieskogel it becomes steeper though. We ascend via secured paths beside a ravine and over block scree and rocky steps, possibly also firn, up to the Feilerscharte, 2926 m. Lastly, we climb up the blocky but not overly difficult southwest ridge to the Fundusfeiler, 3079 m. Descent over the same route.

Mark Zahel
