The trail through the vanished village of Fugau. This tour connects the sundial village of Taubenheim with Jüttelsberg in the Czech Republic.
Few places symbolize the complicated yet symbiotic coexistence of the Czech and German populations over the centuries as strongly as the vanished village of Fugau. The first historical mention of the village dates back to 1410. Before the Second World War, there were 143 houses here, in which 739 people lived.
The village was self-sufficient and a railroad line ran through the village from 1875, but the residents never managed to get a stop. These tracks are still used by Deutsche Bahn today.
After the end of the Second World War, most of the inhabitants had to leave their homes, but there was no resettlement by Czech residents. This sealed the fate of the village once known as "Sonnental". The only remnants of the community today are the ruins of the waterworks and the remains of the cemetery.
Today, Fugau is a reminder of our former German fellow citizens who voluntarily decided to live on Czech territory for religious reasons and who prospered on the fertile soil of Fugau. In the new millennium, Fugov is also a remarkable place of reconciliation between the two nations, of mutual understanding and deep appreciation for the work of their ancestors.
