Since the construction of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel, Visp has developed into a hub. Here, you don't get off but change: to the Matterhorn-Gotthard railway (to Zermatt) or to the post bus (to Saas-Fee). But Visp is more than just a transfer station: It's worth strolling through the old town alleys before heading to Brig. This route mostly follows the Rhone. Along the way, you could swim in Brigerbad. Indoor and outdoor pools, steam baths, saunas, a grotto, and the 184-meter-long water slide leave nothing to be desired for relaxation. At the destination in Brig, the Stockalper Palace is the top attraction. Kaspar Jodok von Stockalper had the palace built between 1658 and 1678. Stockalper was the most powerful man in Valais in the 17th century. His wealth was mainly based on the salt trade. "White gold" was then one of the most important consumer goods. Stockalper also expanded the medieval route over the Simplon Pass, now a popular hiking route.
