Buchbergwarte and Matraswarte are two observation towers in the Neulengbach / Laabental area, located about 17km apart as the crow flies. Hiking trails crossing several hill ranges connect these two viewpoints.
This hike requires good fitness, so it is only suitable for advanced hikers and those who really want to know what they are doing. Due to the fact that it practically always goes either uphill or downhill (sometimes quite steep), there are few opportunities to catch your breath. In return, you are rewarded with wonderfully quiet forest and meadow trails, beautiful valley views, and of course the two observation towers offering spectacular views over the Vienna Woods and the Tullnerfeld.
Author’s recommendation
It is highly recommended to be dropped off and picked up, as there is no reasonable way to reach the start and end points of the hike by public transport. Also, it should not be forgotten that the Matraswarte and the Schöpflhütte are not accessible by car. Therefore, the descent from Schöpfl must also be planned, both in terms of time and energy budget.
The earliest possible place where you can be picked up by car is the Island Pony Farm at the foot of Schöpfl. This means another approx. 30 minutes descent over a partly very steep route.

The hike begins at Buchbergwarte, north of Neulengbach. Buchbergwarte can be reached by car and there are plenty of parking spaces nearby. Before starting, you should not miss the opportunity to enjoy the view from the tower. In good weather, you can see as far as Tulln, St. Pölten, and Vienna.
The first section of the hike leads down to Neulengbach, partly over forest and meadow paths, and finally through the village itself until you pass the Neulengbach castle to the right. Those interested can make a short detour to the castle itself or head to the main square to refresh themselves at the pastry shop "Heiß & Süss" and the butcher's "Köcher".
After crossing the West railway line, the first ascent begins via Dreiföhrenstraße up to the forest tavern and the Dreiföhren chapel. Those interested can stop there (if open). The path continues climbing the Kohlreit and along the ridge, partly with beautiful views of the valley (including the not-so-beautiful West motorway). At the village of Hart, the descent to Altlengbach begins. Via Auhofstraße and the West motorway underpass, you finally reach Altlengbach church square, where you can take a break. Recommendation: Simhofer bakery at the church square, with excellent pastries, Danish pastries, and coffee.
The trail goes right past the church and uphill towards Maiß. Those interested can make a detour to Schulzhütte if they crave hearty food. Otherwise, the path passes idyllic, secluded single-family houses and quiet forest and meadow trails down again into Großgraben.
After a few minutes of actually flat hiking, the final ascent to Schöpfl begins. It is final because from this point on it goes almost only uphill. This section is surely one of the most beautiful if you want to enjoy the majestic silence of relatively untouched forests. The ascent goes just past the Falkenstein hut (observe opening times!) and continues to the Wienerwald golf club with the Stegermaier guesthouse. Schöpfl is already in sight then.
The last stretch up Schöpfl is surely the most challenging of all, not only because of the general fatigue after the already quite long route. But the path upwards is steep and passes through quite rough terrain. First, you have to cross the Lammerau creek, then the ascent begins via the so-called Pensioners' Trail. It's called this way because this path is a bit flatter than the Heinrich-Gith Trail (which is really very steep sometimes), but also longer. And no less challenging because the path mostly runs over a deeply eroded and stony hollow path, which was also heavily obstructed by broken wood due to logging. It is therefore advisable to walk extra slowly, place steps very carefully, and take frequent breaks.
Eventually, you reach the summit of Schöpfl, where the Schöpfl hut and the Matraswarte await you. Those interested can still climb Matraswarte and enjoy the view over the Vienna Woods and Mostviertel. Otherwise, the Schöpfl hut invites you to a last stop and refreshment.
Public transport
Traveling by public transport is not recommended. Theoretically, you can take the train to Neulengbach and start the route from there. But since a return hike from Schöpfl to Neulengbach is hardly feasible and bus connections from Brand-Laaben to Neulengbach are rather sparse, public transport is not a viable option.Directions
West Motorway exit Altlengbach, then follow B19 to Neulengbach. After the railway viaduct, turn right, then before the Park & Ride facility turn left and follow the signs to Buchbergwarte

Parking
Buchbergwarte offers sufficient parking spaces. However, since the route usually cannot be walked in both directions on the same day, it is absolutely recommended to be dropped off and picked up. If this is not possible, you should travel with two vehicles, parking one vehicle at the foot of the Schöpfl (Forsthof) and the other at Buchbergwarte. If that is also not possible, you should consider a two-day hike including an overnight stay at the Schöpfl hut.Coordinates

Equipment
Good, waterproof hiking boots are advisable because the path is partly steep and rocky and also crosses a creek. In summer, sun protection is also recommended.Localization
