Tourists were already traveling to Val d'Anniviers in the 19th century. Witnesses of this era are the historic hotels Bella Tola and Weisshorn. Bella Tola is named after the mountain of the same name. A hiking trail leads up this three-thousander.
The journey starts in Sierre. The post bus climbs leisurely upwards. We look out the window, gaze over the Rhone Valley and down to the highway and industrial area. Suddenly the Val d'Anniviers opens up. A narrow road winds along the flank and leads into the mountain valley. Steep rock walls tower on the left, on the right side a sheer cliff yawns behind the guardrails. In Vissoie, we change. The village is somewhat of a hub. Then it is just a few minutes' drive to St-Luc. The stop is directly in front of the Grand Hotel Bella Tola. The magnificent building was built in 1859 and breathes the air of a long history. Especially wealthy Englishmen and rich nobles stayed at Bella Tola around the turn of the century. The hotel is named after the mountain of the same name. It rises between Val d'Anniviers and the Turtmanntal – 3025 meters high. Mountain hikers should not be intimidated by this altitude.
