The hike to Lissos offers everything that makes for a top-notch tour in Crete: a wildly romantic gorge lined with oleander bushes, a high plateau with panoramic coastal views, and the archaeological site of ancient Lissos, uncovered in the 1950s. Here, we leave the gorge to the left onto a mule trail (yellow-and-black trail markers), which zigzags upward to the upper edge of the gorge (if you continued straight through the gorge bed, you’d return to Sougia via a marked loop trail). On the Kandouni plateau, the reddish-brown trail now winds through easy-to-navigate hedgehog-puff vegetation,
