The hike starts at Oberdorf station, where we first admire the dinosaur footprints in the quarry between Oberdorf and Lommiswil. The tracks come from huge herbivores, specifically a group of brontosaurs. From the lookout platform, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the dinosaur tracks; information boards explain their origin and provide interesting facts, for example that the tracks are around 145 million years old.
From Oberdorf we then go over to the hermitage in the Verena Gorge. The hermitage consists of a hermit's house, the Verena and Martin chapels, and two grottoes. As a cultural asset of national importance, the hermitage is under monument protection. The path from this quiet spot to the bustling city center is not far. Hiking along the Verenabach has a peaceful quality. You cross stone and wooden bridges, pass monuments and memorial stones, and the water splashes over moss-covered stones.
The landmark of Solothurn is the St. Ursen Cathedral. 249 steps lead up to the tower and the great panoramic view. At 66 meters high, the view is magnificent; the dizzying depth view of the old town is where many discoveries await, for example the natural history museum where we can continue our initial dinosaur excursion.
