About the monasteries on the Akrotiri Peninsula

The peninsula northeast of Chania boasts three remarkable monasteries. The oldest of these is Moni Katholiko, which is romantically built on a cliff above a gorge and can be reached via a cobblestone path. Moni Gouverneto, located at the starting point, appears quite fortified. Moni Agia Triada, in the style of the Italian Renaissance, is located on the access road and houses a valuable collection of icons in its museum. One of the highlights of this short tour is the Arkoudiotissa Cave (Bear Cave) – named after a stalactite that indeed resembles a bear.

From the parking lot in front of Moni Gouverneto, walk 30 m beside the gate through a metal gate behind which the ticket booth is located. We walk along the monastery wall, pass the entrance to the monastery church, and leave the monastery grounds through a wooden gate. Shortly thereafter, a stepped and paved path begins, which descends the valley with views of the sea and soon the Gouverneto Gorge. After about fifteen minutes, we reach ruined rubble stone houses marking the entrance to the Arkoudiotissa dripstone cave, 190 m long. Inside the cave, a roughly 5 m high stalagmite grows beneath the soot-blackened ceiling, resembling a bear with a bit of imagination. A small chapel nestles against the left cave wall. Archaeological finds prove that the cave was a sanctuary even in pre-Minoan times. From the Bear Cave, we continue down the cobblestone path, passing a round stone building and enjoying the wonderful view of the rocky coastal landscape. Below us opens the Gouverneto Gorge. After

Profile picture of Rolf Goetz Author Rolf Goetz
