Experience the Middle Ages Up Close

At the “Campus Galli” monastery construction site, a piece of the Middle Ages comes to life day by day: Craftsmen and volunteers are building a monastery using 9th-century methods, based on the St. Gallen Monastery Plan. This world-famous plan for an ideal monastery was drawn up 1,200 years ago on the island of Reichenau in Lake Constance. Here, it is now coming to life. Without machines or modern tools, construction of the monastery has been underway since 2012, allowing visitors to experience a medieval construction site up close. Everything must be done by hand; everything is more laborious and takes longer than it does today. The idea for this project came from Aachen-based entrepreneur Bert Geurten and Verena Scondo from Switzerland. The major challenge for the two was finding a suitable plot of land for the project without any money. At first, they were met with nothing but rejections. Just when hope was nearly lost, the town of Meßkirch agreed to provide a 25-hectare site and, on top of that, to contribute financially. Initially, there was considerable criticism of the project. Today, however, the monastery construction site is a tourist magnet and has brought Meßkirch attention not only in Germany.

From Adlerplatz in Meßkirch, we walk to the left past the Hotel Alte Post through a passageway between buildings onto Mühlenweg; at the T-intersection at the end of the street, we turn left and, after a few meters, right onto Siemensweg (signposted “Campus Galli,” blue triangle). We follow this road straight ahead, ignoring all side streets. The paved surface ends at the edge of the built-up area. A good 5 minutes later, we turn right at a three-way trail junction (signposted “Campus Galli,” blue triangle) and walk straight ahead for the next 45 minutes with a wide view until we reach the edge of the forest, first passing under the B 313 federal highway, then past a sinkhole. Later, we cross a road, pass a water tank on the paved path (signposted Leibertingen, Burg Wildenstein), and reach the edge of the forest 5 minutes later. There, we turn right in front of a hunting blind. The trail is unclear at first but improves as we enter the nearby forest. After 10 minutes, it reaches a paved
