The Park of Peace and the Trincerone
Together with the Pozzachio Fortress on the opposite side of the valley, the Matassone Fortress prevented the troops from advancing. Today the fortress can be visited thanks to a visitor's path (trenches, bunkers...). From here the route leads to the Rifugio Malga Zugna at the foot of Monte Zugna in the group of the small Dolomites. Going up the "Sentiero della Pace", you reach the Park of Peace at Cima Zugna (1864 m): an Austrian base for the surveillance of Vallagarina and Vallarasa.

From the Matassone square (866 m), go under a rocky outcrop and take the steep Sat n. 118 path to Malga Rifugio Coni Zugna (1616 m; 2.30 h). Follow the Sentiero della Pace n. 115 in the direction of Passo Buole, called «Termopili d’Italia» , because a large part of the advance of the Punitive Expedition was broken there in May - June 1916. We pass the astronomical observatory of Mount Zugna (40 visitors; visits by appointment) - the first in Trentino Alto Adige (1997), connected by a bridge to the Civic Museum of Rovereto - and then to the Church of the Memory of the Many Fallen. Then we turn towards the Peace Park (1748 m; 0.30 h) and experience the emotion of walking between the brilliant white of the Italian and Austrian stones and shards, which are very close together here and difficult to distinguish. Return to Matassone on the same road (2.30 h).
