The hiking trail network "On the Trails of the Volcanoes" also crosses us in the far east of the volcanic region near Loipersdorf in the truest sense. A part of the right-hand trail is explored by the Handspur Experience Trail near Unterlamm, and from Loipersdorf we hike this charming and varied circular trail. Eleven stations with informative display boards accompany us hikers along the route and we learn all sorts of things about the region that one wouldn't have thought to ask: When was the last time a volcano erupted in southeastern Styria? What is there to say about water, forest, and wine, and why is the Loipersdorf Thermal Spa located where it is now? Spoiler: The original search was not for thermal water. Let's set off and find out!
Our starting point is the parking lot at the Loipersdorf Thermal Spa. Past the roundabout, we come to an information board about the Handspur, where we can already see all eleven upcoming experience stations. Here we go: Right through the forest to Roman tumulus graves with an information board. Here the Handspur splits up or meets again on the return route. We follow the signs to the left towards "Magland" and "Visiting the Neighbors." We follow the forest path gently uphill to a field path; in the west, we see Riegersburg in the distance. Past Station 7 with a resting bench, we switch left onto a field path and hike through a wooded area. We go down to the Mutter-Anna Chapel with the Peace Bell, a symbol against violence and wars. Our path leads right, continuing on a meadow path and then a farm road down to Lammerstraße.
