From Lake Ellis to Lake Michaelson
A demanding ascent stage that gains increasing spectacularity and fascination as it progresses. After a rather lengthy and unspectacular ascent of over 700 meters, the rest area in front of the pass crossing is reached after traversing a slope above some deeply furrowed rock formations. Here the scenario suddenly changes, as the breathtaking view of the low-lying Lake Michaelson unfolds, nestled at the feet of the rugged peaks of the Mount Kenya massif. As if that were not already enough beauty, the wide gorge of the Gorges Valley, surrounded by 200-meter high rock walls, also presents itself to the left. Simply gigantic! The challenging descent to the lake finally becomes a pleasure and also offers fascinating vegetation. The campsite on the west shore of the lake is the finishing touch.
From the campsite at Lake Ellis, the path first leads past some rugged rock formations down into the valley incision of the small Upper River. Over the bridge, the path then leads uphill for some time to a ridge crossing at about 4000 m altitude. Here the path then runs leftward, continuing with slight (more) ups and downs and above some quite impressive rock formations, under spectacular lofty views, in a traverse along the slope over to a saddle. This magical place should be chosen as a rest stop because the view is gigantic. Far below lies the picturesque Lake Michaelson surrounded by the steep slopes and rock walls of the Mount Kenya massif. To the left, the view opens over the impressive Gorge Valley with spectacular, mighty, over 200 m high rock walls, the so-called temple rocks of the sacred mountain. These impressions should be enjoyed as they are unique. The path then continues over a terrain notch towards a plateau and along a flat terrain course under breathtaking views
