Admittedly, names like "Hell" and "Stinkersee" do not sound very attractive, but the hike certainly is: You pass ponds, reeds, and vineyards, can climb the highest observation tower in the Seewinkel, and return through beautiful steppe landscape along the lake area where a herd of semi-wild Przewalski horses graze, back to Illmitz.
From the main square in Illmitz we walk on the Upper Main Street towards Vienna until the intersection with Angergasse (here bus stop Illmitz Obere Hauptstraße) and turn left there. After 5 minutes we take the alley "Am Anger" (signpost "National Park INFO") to the right, hike on a track out of the village and pass the National Park Information Center and the observation point "Salt Meadows and Pond Edges." At the first fork we go straight and at the next left, always following cycle path B10. Vineyards accompany us on the right, on the left lies the conservation zone Illmitz-Hölle with steppe-like vegetation and several small ponds. After about 1.5 hours, we reach a road, where we turn left past the Upper Stinkersee (rest area, wooden observation stand) to meet the pond cycle path B20 again at the edge of the conservation zone. On this path, we turn right, pass the wine tavern Zur Hölle and shortly after already see the observation tower in the Hölle ahead. We go back and follow the
