From Hinterzarten to Mathisleweiher
Hinterzarten takes care of its guests. While winter sports enthusiasts are well served with cross-country ski trails, toboggan runs, and downhill slopes, the aim is also to satisfy winter hikers. A whole range of winter-suitable hiking routes has been laid out, regularly gritted, maintained, and marked with blue signposts. Our circular route No. 4 leads through Hinterzarten's beautiful winter landscape from the train station to the small Mathisleweiher, where, if the ice is thick enough, you can also go ice skating.
From the entrance of the train station in Hinterzarten, we are just a few steps away from Freiburger Straße, cross it, follow it to the right for about 100 m, and immediately turn left behind the Kurhaus to a parking lot. At the back end of the parking lot, keeping slightly to the left, we find the portal to the Säbelthomaweg and follow it towards Herchenwäldle. We cross the ski trail tracks and the Zartenbach stream and walk about 250 m to a crossroads. We turn left, stroll over the wintry Zartenbach plain to the signpost Am Schwefelmättle, turn right there, through a small forest section and come across the cross path Am Wolfsgrund next to the Windeck toboggan slope. We keep left and reach the Hugenbergweg, which joins our path from the right at the height of a playground. We follow it uphill to some higher-located residential houses. This path is also prepared.
