On the Wachtkopf north of Gündelbach, there was once said to be a Roman watch post that observed the settlement in the Metter valley. Today, we look from the rest area and the shelter over the steep vineyards to Gündelbach. Viticulture was introduced here in the 12th/13th century by the Cistercian monks of Maulbronn Monastery.
From the forest car park on the Wachtkopf, we walk 200 m straight ahead to the viewpoint (shelter) located at the forest edge above the vineyards. From there, the blue cross leads us straight down through the vineyards to Gündelbach. In the village, we go left on Katharinenstraße past the church to Schützinger Straße. Here we go 50 m right, then in front of the Gasthaus Lamm left on Steinbruchweg. Behind the Metter bridge, we continue straight on the signposted Schreckstein circular trail; above the stairs, we meet the blue cross again. After ascending into the "Großer Fleckenwald", we orient ourselves left on the red line (HW 10) and hike over the wooded ridge to the observation tower on Eselsberg. The tower, built in 1925, is 18.2 m high. The hut of the Swabian Alb Association is staffed on Sundays and holidays; then the wood-clad tower can also be climbed and you can enjoy a 360° panoramic view of the Löwensteiner Berge, the Swabian Alb, and the Black Forest.
