For the 16-kilometre route, plan seven hours of hiking time. It is best to take the gondola from Grächen up to Hannigalp at the start to save some altitude meters. In general, an early start is recommended for this route. This side of the valley is spoiled by the sun, and it seems that the path’s age, having been opened in 1954, is what gives it its charm. Ancient larch stands and lush flower meadows line the path; grasses, mosses, and lichens overgrow the rocks. At an average altitude of 2000 metres above sea level, the path runs through the steep walls of the Balfrin group. Partly very exposed, it crosses rock bands, with exposed sections secured by wire ropes, and surprises with dizzying views down below. The views are thrilling: Fletschhorn, Lagginhorn, and Weissmies to the left; above the Rhone valley stands the distinctive pyramid of Bietschhorn, and from the valley, the white round church of Saas-Balen shines up.
