The entire Three Franconian Stone Trail is 46 km long and hardly feasible in one day. Our suggestion covers a section leading to three interesting destinations: the natural monument Emperor Oak in Füttersee, the Romanesque church in Großbirkach, and the Old Three Franconian Stone. The stele was erected in 1892 at the point where the administrative districts created by the Kingdom of Bavaria — Upper, Middle, and Lower Franconia — touched. In the course of the territorial reform in 1972, the intersection shifted southeast. The new Three Franconian Stone, a rock block weighing 2.5 tons and 2.80 m wide, stands between Sixtenberg and Freihaslach.
From the cemetery in Geiselwind we stay on Fütterseer Straße, ignore all turn-offs, and ascend after a right curve to a row of trees. From here it goes downhill. We pass a riding stable and reach Füttersee via Bergstraße. Here turn left into the village and after crossing the bridge follow the signs »To Emperor Oak« on the right. After a short ascent, we stand before the natural monument Emperor Oak. Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Fabienne, it lost about half of its crown in 2018. Legends associate the tree with Charlemagne or Barbarossa; foresters estimate its age at 400 to 500 years. In any case, its size—35 m in height and 8.40 m trunk circumference—is impressive. Incidentally, the meadow with the oak played a role during the turbulent APO years; in July 1969 Fritz Teufel, Dieter Kunzelmann, and other left-wing activists camped here. From the oak, a footpath leads across the meadow upwards and meets a forest path near the waterworks. Turn left here (marking Three Franconian Stone
