From Eltville to Eberbach Monastery
The scenic and historically outstanding adventure hike takes us from the former Electoral as well as Archbishopric residence Eltville through a premier site of Rheingau winegrowing to the Scharfenstein castle ruins, the Gothic town of Kiedrich, and the well-known Eberbach monastery, an almost mystical place. After forest and many vineyards, the last part of the tour runs directly along the Rhine.
From the narrow lanes of Eltville's old town, the marking »black diamond« or the Rheinsteig access path (yellow marking) leads us to the height of the premier vineyard Taubenberg – with a steep ascent at the forest edge. Following the Rheinsteig (blue marking), we go through the forest to the Scharfenstein castle ruins. Built in 1160, the ancestral seat of the wealthy Scharfenstein noble family has been decaying since the 16th century. Those wishing to climb the renovated bergfried must first equip themselves with a key, helmet, and flashlight at the Kiedrich municipality. Known rightly as the treasure chest of Gothic art, we reach Kiedrich after a short steep descent. Outstanding is the sacred architectural ensemble with the Valentinus Church, built around 1300. The inventory from around 1500 is almost fully preserved, including the oldest playable organ in Germany, the Kiedrich Madonna, and the hand-carved choir stalls. Following the Rheinsteig, we reach the Eberbach Monastery in
