From Ebenalp via Seealpsee to Wasserauen
The high plateau of Ebenalp is part of the Alpstein massif, which rises in the northeastern Appenzell region. The highest point of the Alpstein is Säntis; other prominent peaks include Altmann and Hoher Kasten. Seealpsee, Sämtisersee, and Fälensee provide blue spots in the gray limestone and karst landscape. "Wildkirchli caves, prehistoric site, 10 minutes". The signpost reveals the first intermediate destination. In the Wildkirchli caves, St. Gallen scientist Emil Bächler made prehistoric finds between 1904 and 1908, such as cave bear bones and stone tools. The caves were supposedly used by bears and humans since the Paleolithic era. Later hermits lived in the caves, and today objects from prehistoric daily life can be admired in the hermit's hut.
