From Chora to the Troullos summit (Serifos, Cyclades)
Hike from the picturesque Chora to Troullos (highest mountain of Serifos). We follow old paths and enjoy beautiful views of Chora, the mountainous landscape, old cultivated terraces, and the sea.
The route initially follows marked hiking trails. The mule track from the old main village Chora to the chapel of Saint George (Agios Georgios) was elaborately and beautifully built with stone pavement and retaining walls. It rises steadily along a rocky mountain slope. In former times, miners used it as a connection between Chora and the mines of Megalo Livadi. After the chapel, the path winds through low vegetation with sage, thyme, etc. The last section to Troullos (alternative spelling: Troulos) partly follows an unmarked path and partly off-trail over a broad ridge. This section is also easy to manage. The summit is easy to recognize and the terrain is safe. At the summit, you are rewarded with a splendid view over a large part of the island and the sea.

Especially in summer, it is recommended to start early. In full sunshine, the ascent to the chapel Agios Georgios can otherwise become quite strenuous.
Roadbook
The path initially follows the marked hiking trail No. 2. For this, we walk uphill from the bus stop or the parking lot entrance in Pano Chora towards the windmills. At the first windmill, we take the road that leads steeply uphill to the left past the windmills and the restaurant "Οι Πλάκες". The road ends shortly after the restaurant, and we follow the signs to the right to reach the old mule track. It rises steadily northwest along the rocky mountainside. In many places, the old stone pavement is still preserved. In part, the path features elaborate retaining walls. The view back to Chora is one of the most beautiful and photogenic views of the old island capital! Finally, we reach a saddle with the chapel Ag. Georgios.
After the chapel, the path becomes narrower. It winds with a gentle slope through low vegetation with thyme, sage, etc. Then the path leads onto an asphalt road. To the left, it goes to a helicopter landing site (windsock, white building). However, we follow the road to the right and shortly reach the main road at the scattered settlement Glyftika. Here trail No. 2 ends at an orientation board showing the hiking trails.
We now follow trail No. 4. To do so, we cross the main road and walk about 30 meters on a gravel road. A straight ahead track is blocked here by bulky waste. We follow the gravel road to the right and turn left after a few meters onto the hiking trail No. 4 (signpost). The path leads through low vegetation northwest, ascending somewhat more steeply. It is repeatedly marked with small metal signs or painted markings. Then we reach a flat saddle.
We leave the marked path here at a dilapidated stone building and hike along the broad mountain ridge northeast towards the summit of Troullos. Like many other peaks in Greece, it has a distinctive survey pillar that makes it easy to recognize. Sometimes, trail marks can be found, then we hike again off-trail through the low vegetation. In places, there are low stone walls or rocky passages to cross. We simply choose the route based on the best way forward. In the last few meters to the summit, a path is recognizable again.
At the summit, take enough time to enjoy the magnificent 360-degree panoramic view!
The return is along the same path.
