At the northern edge of Paul da Serra rises the Bica da Cana, 1620 m, a good stretch above the plateau, always provided that the region is not currently enveloped in a trade wind cloud. At the foot of the panoramic peak begins an adventurous levada path to the burnt-out volcanic vent of the Pináculo, adventurous because several high waterfalls cascade onto the path throughout the year.
The hike begins at ER 105 at the foot of Bica da Cana. Next to the paved access road to a mountain hut (Casa de Abrigo), bordered by concrete posts, we follow a signpost onto a path (PR 17, direction Lombo do Mouro). The initially paved path leads gently downhill through low bush forest and after 10 min meets a signposted cross path at 1470 m. We follow this to the right towards Lombo do Mouro (to the left leads to Casa do Caramujo). In June, the Madeira orchid (Dactylorhiza foliosa) blooms and, also endemic, the feathered marguerite (Argyranthemum pinnatifidum), which closely resembles the daisies widespread in Central Europe. If visibility permits, there is an impressive view down into the valley of São Vicente.Almost 20 min after the turn-off, the kilometer zero marker points to the source of the Levada da Serra, fed by trickles and small waterfalls dripping from a rock face.
