From the post bus station Kurhaus Balmberg, three to four very different paths lead up to the Solothurn local mountain Weissenstein. This one is probably the “steepest”. You walk past the Kurhaus and the lift station uphill and take the hiking trail towards Nesselbodenröti. It goes steeply uphill. The path is mostly wet and shady. Once the ridge at Nesselbodenröti is reached, it becomes bright and airy. The mountain forest, interspersed with beech, oak and pine trees, is already an experience in itself. The hiking trail leads slightly below the ridge to the peak of Röti. Experienced hikers can also walk off-trail along the ridge. Here, views open repeatedly to Balmberg and to the limestone rocks of Chamben. From the triangulation point on Röti, you then enjoy a beautiful view of the Alps before walking about 20 more minutes down to Weissenstein. Before the descent by the Weissenstein cable car, you can still stop at the Sennhaus Weissenstein or in the Hotel Weissenstein.

    Author’s recommendation

In the clay limestone rock walls along the path around Balmberg, many shells, trilobites and, with some luck, even whole ammonites can be discovered.
