Alb is not just Alb. While the Swabian Alb is a low mountain region, the other Alb is a small river rising 10 km south of Bad Herrenalb. It runs lively through the spa park of Bad Herrenalb. In 1839, a certain Doctor Weiß treated his patients with Alb water, i.e., with cold wet compresses, and founded the first hydrotherapy institute. This was the start of spa operations in the village of Herrenalb. The good air also attracted guests from near and far. The circular hike to Bernstein offers fresh air as well as wonderful views over Baden and Württemberg. The syllable "Bern" is derived from the Old High German word "bero" meaning "bear". Bears were supposedly native to the Northern Black Forest until the late Middle Ages. The view from Bernstein extends into the Murgtal valley, to the Hornisgrinde, to the Fremersberg near Baden-Baden, into the Rhine Plain, and on clear days as far as the Vosges and the Palatinate.
