The Wiwannihütte lies in the midst of a magnificent mountain world above the Rhone Valley. The ascent is steep, but there is so much to see: Mischabel group, Weisshorn and then this view into the Baltschiedertal.
Ausserberg is the village of Suonen. Many historic water channels are still in operation there today. They are an important source of water for irrigating the meadows and for preserving the vegetation on the sunny slopes. They are called Manera, Undra, Mittla and Niwärch; their construction dates back to the 14th century. The Niwärch is the most spectacular of all. You can follow it through a tunnel or dizzyingly along the historic path, the outer Niwärch, far into the Baltschiedertal. On the way to the Wiwannihütte, we only briefly follow a flat, harmless section of the Niwärch water channel. Then it becomes steep: through the forest and monotonously along a forest road. This ends at the Fuxtritt. You can also reach it by private car or, for a steep price, by taxi bus. But who wants that? We enjoy once more the deep view down to Visp and the Rhone valley, then the hut path really starts to bring joy. After some switchbacks through the forest comes open terrain. We stop more often.
