Although the Friendship Path does not have more challenging elevations, with a length of almost 20 kilometers, it is rather recommended for the experienced hiker. However, this hiker will enjoy a unique, cross-border hike through the southern Bliesgau and the neighboring Lorraine.
Author’s recommendation
Shortly before the route branches off along the border towards Ormesviller, about 300 meters northwest at the Peace Cross there is a beautiful viewpoint with seating. In the parish church of St. Martin in Medelsheim, a gem of the southwest German region can be found with the gothic altar relief. Some gothic frescoes from the 14th century have also been preserved in the choir.

Usage note:
Dear hiking friends, the hiking trails also run along natural paths through pristine nature reserves and forests. Preserving and protecting nature is important to us.
We also want to point out risks and therefore ask you to stay on the designated paths and not to step on existing rock formations for safety reasons. Furthermore, we point out the presence of natural forest hazards. Due to weather conditions, some sections of the path may be softened and slippery and should therefore be walked with particular care. Sturdy footwear is recommended on all routes, and surefootedness is essential.
Use of hiking trails and premium hiking trails is at your own risk.
Marking and signage:
All quality trails are circular routes that can be walked in both directions. Therefore, signage is provided both ways. Try walking the route the other way round, and you will discover completely new perspectives and different viewpoints.

Roadbook
The circular hike starts in Medelsheim at the Kreuzkapelle and leads up to the height of the Husarenberg into one of the core zones of the Bliesgau biosphere reserve, the Baumbusch nature reserve. As soon as the forest section, predominantly shaped by hornbeams, allows a view of the landscape again, the route has already reached French territory. With the forest edge on the right side of the path, the route goes a bit down the hill into the village of Erching, which was completely destroyed during World War II by an attack from the US Air Force. The path takes us past a monument next to the town hall, which commemorates the terrible events of February 23, 1945.
Passing the church of Saint Maurice, the route continues for another good kilometer through the regional nature park Northern Vosges before returning back to the German side and continuing through the Bickenalb valley to Utweiler. Behind the village, the route initially follows the border directly before another detour again leads across the border into the French Ormesviller. Shortly before the village, the rest area at the Chapelle St. Joseph offers a welcome opportunity for a picnic. Along the Rue d'Altheim, the hike finally returns to Germany. Leading via Peppenkum, the village of Medelsheim is the final destination of the loop.
Before the route ends again at the starting point, hikers pass the 14 masonry stations of the Crossway.
