Friedrich-August trail (western section)
Undoubtedly, the western Friedrich-August trail, the crossing of the Seiser ridge ("On the Schneid") from Fassa to the Tierser-Alpl-Joch, does not quite have the appeal of the eastern section. However, it still remains a fascinating high-altitude stroll between Gröden and Fassa, over Seiser Alm and Duron Valley. On the return trip to Campitello, we are then presented with the beauties of the inner Valle di Duron, its towering walls, picturesque alpine pastures, and the famous "Elephant's Back".
From Rifugio Micheluzzi take the road no. 533 upwards over meadows to the north, then more to the right (northeast) through forest onto a mountain ridge. Ascend this, later turn right over the Ru di Pegn and over meadows northwards up to Plattkofelalm, 2248 m. Now head westwards up to the Plattkofel hut, 2300 m, at the Fassa pass. On path no. 4 follow the grassy ridge of the Seiser ridge ("On the Schneid") westwards to the saddle before the Palaccia, which is bypassed on the left into the Sella Palaccia behind, 2203 m. On the left side (south side) of the ridge to the next saddle and further to Mahlknechtjoch, 2188 m, with the crossing road no. 532. Straight on the road no. 4 through a high valley westwards up to the Tierser-Alpl hut at the pass of the same name, 2438 m. Return to Mahlknechtjoch. Keeping right, take road no. 532 over meadows southwards down to the beautifully located Malga Docoldaura, 2046 m. On the road now descend through the stone pine forest, then left (east) down
