Ruins of Freudenstein Castle: A historic fortress from the 12th and 13th centuries. On the castle hill near the old farmstead, remains of the castle complex can still be found. Documented already in 1272 and 1303 mentioning Passau. Owners of this castle were the Prueschenken and Eberhard von Wallsee. From the parking lot on the federal road, slightly ascending through the village of Freudenstein. At the first intersection, turn right and you will already meet the Roßbach (Freudensteiner Bach) until you reach a fork and a bridge. Here it leads left along the creek and after the last two houses, we enter the forest. Over a footbridge, we branch off to the right and after about 100 m over a second footbridge on a forest road in a small side valley of the Roßbach uphill to Freudensteiner Straße. The continuation path branches off to the right, 70 m to the left stands the “Sonnberger Chapel.” With a beautiful panoramic view, the route leads back to the starting point.
