Freisen Crosses

The hiking trail "Freisen Crosses" was designed as a circular route around the district of Freisen. From the center of Freisen, it leads over the hilltops of Sparrenberg, Kahlenberg, Trautzberg, Hellerberg, and Füsselberg at an elevation of 500 to 600 m. On this hike, all 28 crosses located in the Freisen area can be visited. The stone, wood, and metal crosses, up to 4 m high, have been erected since 1834 for various reasons such as thanks for surviving a plague, for a safe return from World War II, or in memory of the Freisen Passion Plays. They have been preserved or restored by private individuals, local clubs, and organizations. Besides its scenic attractions and beautiful views of the surroundings of Freisen to the Ostertal and the neighboring Rhineland-Palatinate, the hike offers a wealth of cultural and historical background. Since 1864, the Good Friday procession to the plague cross on the Füsselberg has taken place annually. The approximately 20 km long route should be planned as a day tour.
