The forest walk with fairy-tale rocks initially leads us to the spectacular karst cave Caverna Sciason (Sieson), which opens like a gorge and plunges almost 100 meters deep. Inside, icicles remain all year round. Fortunately, the abyss is secured with a railing. Another destination is Forte Campolongo, which was built by the Italian military from 1908 to 1912, but was destroyed after just three weeks of war and then taken over by the Austro-Hungarian troops. The long-range combat position was recently restored and is now freely accessible. You should take your time to explore the extensive site. The then strategic location means for us today: panoramic location. The view extends far over the Val d’Astico.
We turn our backs to Rifugio Campolongo and walk across the huge parking lot to the gravel road. Behind the information board, we use the fence gate between tall posts (signposts including »Forte Campolongo«, 810). The narrow path runs over the pasture towards the forest, where the start of the trail is clearly visible due to light stones and a signpost. In the forest, after another fence gate, we reach a cross path where we go left. A well-developed forest trail leads around rocks to the Caverna Sciason, into which we peer down in awe. Afterwards, it goes through a short natural tunnel on a clear, partly steep path through the forest to the hairpin bend of a gravel road. Here we keep right uphill and reach after a few curves the entrance to the Campolongo work. Through the tunnel, we come to a kind of courtyard with a great view over the Val d’Astico.
