Following the tracks of the bison Putifar with children
Parking - Buffet by the bison enclosure - Putifar Spring - Putifar's Pear Tree - Spring below the Quarantine Cottage - Buffet - Parking
If you're wondering where to go on the weekend with children, we definitely recommend the Bison enclosure. We will take you to the Tribeč Mountains, walk through the educational trail, find a spot for a barbecue, and enjoy an easy ascent with the kids to an inconspicuous hill with views.
You can park your car at the official parking lot right by the main gate to the area. The entrance to the bison enclosure is about 600 m from the parking lot along an asphalt road.
At the start, you will purchase a ticket (children 1.50 EUR, adults 3.00 EUR) to the enclosure. The ticket price includes a guide with expert commentary. Tours of the enclosure are available from April 1 to October 31. During this period, you also have the option to feed the bison, but this only takes place twice a day: at 9:00 and 14:00.
Within the enclosure area, there is an observation terrace with information boards about the history of bison. You will have continuous views of the animals grazing on the grass or resting under the trees. After the tour, we continue along an educational trail where you will find many information boards with interesting local information. The educational trail starts and ends at the main entrance to the enclosure.
An important stop on the route is the Putifar spring, where you can refill water. In case of rain, a covered gazebo is also available here. Beyond the spring, the asphalt road ends and shortly after we come to Putifar’s pear tree, where the forefather of Slovak bison used to stay. After his death, remains were stored in the vicinity of this place. We then walk along a forest road to the spring below the Quarantine Cottage.
In the autumn season, many cep mushrooms grow around the enclosure, so you can combine exploring the surroundings with searching for mushrooms.
During the walk along the enclosure, a view of the rocky Veľký Lysec opens up, which we recommend visiting next time. The remaining section of the educational trail leads through the typical Tribeč forest back to the main entrance of the Bison enclosure.
Author’s recommendation
In the immediate vicinity of the bison enclosure, we recommend visiting Lazarova spring, where besides the spring you will also find a covered gazebo and a swing.
Definitely worth a visit is the nearby hill Člnok (438 m), which offers distant views of the main ridge of the Tribeč Mountains. You can reach the summit via the red hiking trail. According to information from KST, a new lookout tower is planned to be built at the summit.
