The Jaufen Ridge refers to the summit ridge extending westward from the Jaufen Pass, culminating at the Hohe Kreuzspitze and especially prominent above the Passeier Valley. On the north side is the Ratsching Valley with a series of alpine pasture areas, some of which have been allocated for skiing. Besides the Ratschinger Alm trail, a ridge hike is mainly of interest. Up to the Fleckner, the effort is moderate.
From the site of the demolished Sterzing Jaufen House, 1990 m, ascend briefly on the pass road until path no. 12 branches off to the right behind the Jaufen lift. You'll then proceed without major altitude changes along the gentle northern slope, sometimes crossing ski slopes. Slightly ascending, after about an hour we reach the Rinnersattel, 2031 m, where a southern access from the so-called Roman hairpin merges. From now on our route follows the scenic broad ridge. The Fleckner Hut remains below, while a summit with a cross is on the right side off-route. For the later descent, note the (unsigned) junction no. 10A and approach the Fleckner summit, 2331 m, which is most quickly ascended directly via the east ridge (trail trace). For the return, the official northern route with wider detours can be used. Then, following the aforementioned no. 10A, descend into a wide cirque on the Ratsching side. Temporarily stay right along the edge, then back left towards the first flat ground. Partly

Mark Zahel
