Rail hike in the Vienna surroundings: from Fischamend to Schwechat.
From the Fischamend train station to Schwechat station: through the Donauauen National Park, partly along the Way of St. James, and along the Schwechat river. For children, there are planes landing/taking off to observe on the way.

The hike can also be started or ended in Mannswörth (train station).

Roadbook
From the Fischamend train station we head towards the town center, cross Hainburger Straße and turn left before the church of St. Michael following the first signpost for the Way of St. James to the pedestrian bridge over the Fischa. Be careful when crossing, this bridge can be slippery or even icy in winter conditions. The path continues along the Way of St. James to the underpass below the motorway and then immediately left along the motorway. This 400m section is somewhat unpleasant because the noise from the motorway is quite intense. At the first opportunity, we turn right and soon reach the bank of the Danube through the floodplain forest. We follow it for several kilometers in the Donauauen National Park. The only noise to be heard here comes from the airplanes that land or take off at the nearby Schwechat airport. The planes appear very close, which certainly makes the hike an experience for children. We pass a meadow with the wayside shrine of the “Kummernuß Saint” and come to the confluence of the Schwechat and Danube. Shortly before the Schwechat sewage treatment plant, we leave the Donauauen National Park again and follow an asphalt section, first past the sewage treatment plant, later 400m without sidewalk along the busy state road L2064. Soon a path branches off to the left, which leads as a cycle path along the East motorway with a 90-degree bend to Mannswörth. We cross the state road and follow the cycle path for about 300m. At a crossroads, we turn right into the tree avenue. Here we leave the Way of St. James. At the end of the tree avenue, we cross the Schwechat on the Zaineth Bridge and continue to the T-junction. Here we could turn right back into the Donauauen National Park, but our hike continues to the left. One walks either on the dam or along the forest edge below for 2 km straight ahead. You see overhead power lines approaching closer and closer. At the overhead power lines, our path turns left and one walks about 3 km along the Schwechat until crossing the Schwechat at Mannswörther Straße and heading towards the station. After the river crossing, we continued in the same direction as before along the Schwechat and after the railway underpass along the tracks to the station.
