Selected alternatives for you

In the Feldkirchen-Moosburger hill country, this easy circular hike with only 450 m elevation gain offers a chance to experience the special features of the Flatschacher See and the Poitschacher Graben.

This easy circular hike with about 400 m elevation offers the possibility to choose alternatives, especially since 20 km could be too taxing for less experienced hikers. The planned breaks promote social contact and moments of rest at beautiful resting places in the Feldkirchen-Moosburger hill country.

After passing through the district Waiern with important facilities of de la Tour, we reach the Flatschacher See outflow – it leads us via a small Kneipp installation to the gem of the Flatschacher See. Over the southeastern part of the Saurachberg, we reach Himmelberg with its Biberstein Castle and the city parish church. For the next approx. 5 km, we are accompanied by the Tiebelbach – it creates a pleasant atmosphere when hiking on trail no. 7 through the Poitschacher Graben. We then head east to the Church Hl Ulrich and the Gh. Kreuzwirt to enjoy a well-deserved lunch break – afterwards it continues via Powirtschach and Seitenberg back to the parking place.

    Author’s recommendation

At the beginning of the Poitschacher Graben, it is worth reading the large information board about the historical importance of the Tiebel at the "Pulverstämpf".

    Safety information

The path along the Flatschacher See outflow requires attention in some places (e.g. around the small Kneipp facility), especially in the cold season (crampons!) – this also applies to the ascent and descent around the parish church St. Ulrich.

During these 20.5 km, several changes between main agricultural roads (HWW) and asphalted public roads are necessary – on the latter we strictly keep to the LEFT WALKING rule (walking side by side is possible).

    Tips and suggestions

Pay attention to information boards in the hospital area, at Flatschacher See, and at the beginning of Poitschacher Graben.

    SHORT ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

    easy hike, 400 m elevation gain, 20.5 km, 7 hours duration - of which 5 1/2 h walking time

    Bus station-Kindergartenstraße-Körausweg-Flatschacher See-Flatschach-Schleichenfeld-Tobitsch-Himmelberg/Castle-Tiebelbach/Poitschacher Graben-Poitschach-St. Ulrich-Poitschach-Powirtschach/Seitenberg-Waiern-Leitenweg-Grenzgasse-Bus station

    DETAILED ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

1a (Car): We follow trail numbers 7 and 14 southwest into Martin-Luther-Str. (613 m), turn left at the church towards Leitenweg – cross the federal road and walk 100 m along the federal road to the west. We take the Ernst Schwarz Trail southwest, then immediately head southeast onto Körhausweg (trail no. 16).

1b (ÖBB): From the bus station (557 m), head southeast (Dr.-A.-Lemisch-Platz), turn southwest on Villacher Straße, northwest on Himmelberger Str., west on Kindergartenstraße, cross Ossiacher Straße, at the roundabout go onto Dallnigstraße and turn northwest onto Körhausweg – we are at the start of the Kneipp path to Flatschacher See.

    2.  After crossing the Flatschacher See outflow stream four times, we leave trail no. 16 and go right, northwest along the stream. This leads us to trail no. 8 coming from the south – we pass the tennis court on the right and directly head north to Flatschacher See (1st break, 3.4 km, 677 m).

    ALTERNATIVE

1a: From Flatschacher See head east to the federal road and continue to Waiern to the PP Zentralküche parking.

1b: In Flatschach turn right, east to Pichlern to the federal road, then right, south to Waiern to the PP Zentralküche parking.

    3.  We leave trail no. 8 and go east of the lake along trail no. 16 toward Flatschach – continuing along no. 16, we reach Schleichenfeld, cross the road and after about 200 m at a fork turn right, northwest.

    4.  After about 900 m, we reach Tobitsch – trail no. 8 comes from the left from Saurachberg – both trail numbers lead us to the federal road (B 95). We cross the road, enter Biberstein Castle, and turn right, southeast toward the district Unterboden – before the Tiebel bridge, we follow Steinbruggerweg and after about 350 m meet trail no. 7 (2nd break, 7.6 km, 655 m).

ALTERNATIVE 2 : From Steinbruggerweg turn right, south to the federal road and then left, southeast to Pichlern, and further on to Waiern to the PP Zentralküche parking.

    5.  We continue over the Tiebel bridge – here we meet Tiebelweg and follow trail no. 7 to Poitschach (Tiebel cycling path), specifically to Pulverstämpf (information board). After about 3 km, we take the 3rd break, 11 km, 615 m at a pond left of the path – 800 m earlier we ignore trail no. 7A branching right.

ALTERNATIVE 3 : Follow the right-branching trail no. 7A (Kraßweg) to Pichlern and then left, southeast to Waiern to the PP Zentralküche parking.

    6.  We now go straight ahead to federal road B 93, then right, south to Poitschach, always near the Tiebel. We walk along B 93, then after about 400 m turn left into a main agricultural road (HWW) – crossing B 93 and the Tiebel. After about 200 m at a fork, we turn right, east.

ALTERNATIVE 4 : Continue about 700 m along B 93 to the crossroads to Powirtschach/Seitenberg, then right, northwest, after about 250 m left, southwest – always straight ahead, to reach PP Zentralküche after about 1.5 km passing the Vaschauner property.

    7.  After about 350 m, turn right, south, then after about 100 m (2nd path) left, east – after about 800 m, we reach Goggausee state road (L 80) and turn right, southeast. Immediately afterwards, take a path to church Hl. Ulrich (4th, short break), continuing in a curve (SE-SW) to Wimitzer Straße and Gh. Kreuzwirt (5th, long break, 14.2 km, 592 m).

    8.  We go straight ahead west, cross a road after about 650 m and then cross Tiebelbach – after about 80 m, we follow a road leading to B 93, which we cross.

    9.  We walk between the church and the old castle and shortly after join the bike path to Feldkirchen until Powirtschacher Kreuz – here we turn right, west to Powirtschach/Seitenberg village.

    10. (Car): Shortly after Gh. in Seitenberg, at a fork, take a half-left and leave trail no. 7. After about 1 km, we go sharply east and after about 450 m southwest of Vaschauner property meet Martin-Luther-Straße – turn right, south and reach PP Zentralküche after about 700 m (613 m, 18.5 km).

    11. (ÖBB): We pass PP Zentralküche, walk to the church, turn on a path down to federal road B 95 and the start of Leitenweg. Shortly afterwards turn right, southwest into Renkenweg, Grenzgasse, and Paracelsusstraße. We meet B 95, cross southeastwards Ossiacher Straße and head to the bus station (Departure at :34 each time – except 15:34) (20.5 km, 557 m).

ALTERNATIVE 5: About 200 m after Powirtschacher Kreuz, turn left, west towards Vaschauner property and then continue to PP Zentralküche parking (18.5 km, 613 m) - Car!
