Feistritzer Spitze, 2114 m
In the mighty mountain massif of the Petzen, the Karawanks once again present themselves in all their beauty. The massif shows its harsh north face to the gentle cultural landscape of the Jauntal Valley. The charming side of Petzen appears in early summer when the most beautiful mountain flowers cover the slopes with a colorful carpet: blue gentians, yellow globeflowers, and a pink botanical rarity: the Steiner alpine rockrose, a small orchid and a rare relative of the black rockrose, known for its intense vanilla scent. The long Petzen ridge offers a grand viewing terrace, especially toward the western Karawanks and the rocky walls of the Steiner Alps. To the east, the mountains quickly become lower and transition into a gentle mid-mountain landscape. An easy hiking trail leads from the upper station of the Petzen cable car over the Knieps saddle and the scenic ridge to the Feistritzer Spitze, and a romantic forest and meadow path winds steeply up the northern side directly to the highest point; we combine both paths into a beautiful circular tour. A visit is also worth the town of Bleiburg at the foot of the Petzen, one of the oldest towns in southern Carinthia with a historic town center and a completely preserved city wall.
From the upper station, we ascend a few meters to the chapel and then go right downhill to the reservoir lake; shortly before the lake, the path branches right to the Krischahütte. On a good trail, we quickly master the short descent to the Krischahütte (not serviced), 1578 m, a very beautiful rest spot. Here the paths split again: down the Krischagraben to the valley station or continue to the Feistritzer Spitze. Our route to the summit ascends switchbacks on a steep forest slope to a ridge approx. 1800 m, which extends right to the Neuberschstein, then over rocky slopes and dwarf pine fields to the highest point. There, on the summit of the Feistritzer Spitze, we observed a kestrel hovering in flight. The route to the Knieps saddle is a scenic stroll along the long ridge, ascending and descending, always close to the edge of the north face, which allows impressive views down without danger. We reach the Knieps, 2110 m, our second summit, and shortly afterwards the Knieps saddle, 2012
