During the island's heyday, captains and sailors lived on Fanø, leaving us the typical Fanø houses in the charming towns of Nordby and Sønderho. Away from the tourist crowds, we hike in the Fanø dune plantation and along the west and east coasts of the island. Thus, in one day, we experience the contrast between the storm-beaten rough west coast and the calm east coast, which lies in the lee and therefore under the island's protection, making it an ideal resting and breeding area for many birds.
From the access to the parking lot, we turn right and follow the marked post on the right, marked with yellow and red dots, into the open heathland. Soon we cross a low dune ridge and see some holiday homes in the distance. At a fork, we continue to the right and now follow only the yellow marking. The path winds through a grassy plain and finally passes three holiday homes on the left, leading to a second dune ridge. From here, you can see the North Sea on the island's west coast for the first time, as well as our further path marked with posts. We cross a drainage ditch and continue in the dunes along the right bank of a small lake. After a left bend, the path stays along the shore and now runs parallel to the North Sea, high on the dune ridge above the heath. At intersections, our route is clearly marked.
